SLEEP
a poem
by Dennis Armin Roth
Sleep, my best friend,
knows when I need her.
Then she is here
warm and cozy and cuddly.
She asks no questions, accepts all
I have done in soft, soft
silence. Empty
darkness. I drift off
asleep by myself
though she lies with me.
During the day when
truly alone, surrounded
by sleep-walking people
she is out of reach,
like a woman,
if I need her too much
or try too hard, or worry
she is not here but
hidden, coy, shy.
Until my breath calms,
thoughts unravel, and I say,
Ah, now you are with me.
I am ready, my friend, for you.
ON AGING
A Reflection from Carefully Chosen Words
by Dennis Armin Roth
Age arrives in whispers, carrying secrets in its gentle wake.
Garden roses bloom earlier each year, marking time’s incessant passage.
The doctor’s eyes show knowledge, but not my years.
While the world rushes forward, my steps stumble to a deeper rhythm.
Reading glasses mark my territory like breadcrumbs on a familiar trail.
My father’s face smiles at me in the morning mirror.
This I have witnessed.
This has enriched me.
Below is a print of one of my original watercolors inspired by the coastal south. It’s entitled Twilight over the Bayou. To copy it, simply right-click the image and follow the prompts.
